Dog Photography Awards 2025

Dogs and Minimalism: Denisa Zbrankova Albaniova – Portrait Outdoor Category Winner

Denisa recently won the prestigious Dog Photography Award with her mesmerizing image, “The Shape of Stillness.” The photograph features Dee, a White Swiss Shepherd, poised gracefully on a staircase, the dog’s coat harmonizing perfectly with the background to create a subtle, serene composition. What began as a playful photoshoot with forgotten props transformed into a long-held vision realized, showcasing Denisa’s talent for blending careful planning with spontaneous creativity.

How did you get into dog photography?

As usual, I started by wanting to have beautiful photos of my own dog Aisha and gradually tried to improve and trained on my friend’s dogs. It has been years ago.

Can you walk us through your creative process for your winning image « The Shape of Stillness » ?

I have to admit that there is a pretty funny story behind it. When my friend came to me to take pictures of her own collection of collars and leashes. But she forgot them at home. So we had space for my own visions and I have to say that I have wanted to take pictures of a White Swiss Shepherd on this staircase for a long time. I personally like it when the dog’s color matches the background. It usually creates a subtle exposure.

Throughout the process, what posed the greatest challenge for you?

When I have a concrete idea like in this case, it’s always the hardest for me to get it in a photo. Luckily, Dee is a great collaborator and very well trained dog.

What does the award mean to you?

The award is not only a great pleasure for me, but it also means that my work is appreciated. It is confirmation that my work has meaning, that it is worth something. I value the award even more because it is a competition in which professionals with the same focus participate, which makes it much more challenging.

Lastly, can you give us a glimpse into any upcoming projects you’re currently working on?

I would like to mention my longer-term project called Before they’re gone, in which I capture old dogs who will sooner or later cross the rainbow bridge. This project is very personal, emotional and moving for me. And I hope it will touch the hearts of all dog lovers.
